The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.
Why is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Important?
- It raises awareness – Every day, women are subjected to violence. Observing this day provides us with space to recognize the problem and to start taking steps to reduce and eliminate it.
- It inspires action – This day is not only a chance to raise awareness but to create an atmosphere in which women and men can organize together and take direct action to combat the epidemic of violence against women.
- It brightens the future – Only when women are free from brutality can we create a future in which every person is treated with respect and dignity.
